All about petlings

A petling is a small pet of its own, separate from your pet. There are 5 species (cats, dogs, deer, ferrets, pandas), each in 9 coats, and every petling also rolls its own eye colour, mark, personality and a few hidden surprises. See them all in the Petling Book.

Everything happens in your petling book: tap the paw button on your home screen. A petling is always in one of two places:

• Out: placed in one of your rooms (the garden counts). It wanders the house, comes on walks, trains in the park, naps in beds and eats from feeders.
• Resting in the book: it still gets hungry, dirty and sleepy, and you can feed, wash and play with it from the book, but it can't walk or train. Resting petlings never run away.

New petlings always arrive resting in the book, marked NEW, ready to be taken out.

The Nest is the petling hatchery. Open it from the book's Home page (the Hatch button) or from the album.

The guarantees

• A rare or better within 10 hatches. The count starts again after any rare or legendary, so every Hatch 10 holds at least one.
• A legendary within 60 hatches. A guaranteed legendary is a legendary coat you haven't found yet, while you still have some to find.
• The counters belong to the Nest, so they carry over from one spotlight to the next.

The spotlight

Every 14 days (at 00:00 UTC) a new species takes the spotlight, in the order Cats → Dogs → Deer → Ferrets → Pandas. The spotlight species is 3× as likely, and one of its legendary coats is featured: half of all legendary hatches are that coat, and if a legendary isn't it, the next one is. So the featured coat is yours within 120 hatches at worst. The two legendary coats of a species take turns being featured.

Until Oct 22, a Nest hatch is 3 times as likely to be a dog, and half of all legendary hatches are the Sunbeam dog. Miss it once and the next legendary is guaranteed to be it.

You don't need treats to grow your family. There are three free ways to hatch:

The free daily egg

Once per day (UTC) the Nest gives you a free hatch. It picks any species evenly and uses shop-egg odds: 95% natural, 4.5% rare, 0.5% legendary. It doesn't move the guarantees, and there's no streak to keep.

Egg pieces

Playing the game drops egg pieces, and every 10 pieces become one Nest Egg by themselves.

Each of these pays at most 3 pieces a day, and all together at most 10: one Nest Egg a day if you mix things up.

The weekly care egg

Care for your petlings 15 times in a week (weeks start Monday 00:00 UTC) for a free Nest Egg. A meal, a finished bath, or a toy play that gives Bond each count once.

The book's Shop tab sells an egg for each species for 15 treats: . A shop egg always hatches its own species.

1. Buy the egg. It goes into your bag.
2. Place it in a room at home, tap it and confirm.
3. Your new petling appears in the book, resting and marked NEW.

Shop eggs have no guarantees, but they can be gifted and traded before they hatch. Whoever opens the egg gets the petling and the album rewards.

1. Pick how to pay (Nest Eggs or treats) and tap Hatch 1 or Hatch 10.
2. Tap the egg until it cracks: 3 taps for a natural coat, 4 for a rare (pink cracks), 5 for a legendary (gold cracks). There's a Skip button too.
3. Your petling pops out with its look name (like “Lilac Cat”), 1 to 3 stars, its traits, and a NEW sticker if the coat is new to your album.
4. Choose Name, Keep or Release. Kept petlings wait in your book.

Names

• 1 to 16 characters: letters, numbers, spaces, and _ ' -. Renaming is free, any time.
• When a petling grows up the game asks for a name, if it still has none.
• You can also make it a girl or a boy (girls have eyelashes). That choice is forever.

Personality

Every petling has one of 8 personalities, shown a day after it hatches, the next time you care for it. Each one gives a bonus: see Care & Bond.

Essence is the petling currency. You earn it by keeping and releasing petlings, from new album stickers and from honours, and you spend it on coat tickets: hatch exactly the coat you pick.

A ticket fixes only the coat: eyes, marks, size, sparkle, fur and ears still roll (on Nest odds). Tickets don't count toward the Nest's guarantees.

You can own as many petlings as you like (the book holds 500), but only so many can be out at once. Those are your team spots:

• Take out only works at home: the petling appears next to you in the room you're in. With every spot taken, the game asks who goes back in the book.
• Put away works from anywhere. Putting a placed petling in your bag also sends it to rest.
• If you earn a spot past 20, the treats for one you bought come back.

The book's Album tracks what you've found. It has three views:

• Coats: every coat you have ever owned, hatched, bought or received, even if you released it at once. A new coat sticker pays 20 / 60 / 200 essence (natural / rare / legendary).
• Looks: eyes, marks, sizes, sparkle, long fur and ears per species. Size, ears and fur only count once that petling has grown up. New looks pay 10 / 30 / 100 essence.
• Keepsakes: a photo card of each petling you said goodbye to (the newest 60).

Finished sets earn honours, which pay essence and open the coloured beds in the Petling Shop. The full list is in the Petling Book.

Releasing

Release a petling from its page (or right after hatching): it goes to “a loving new home”, you get its essence and a keepsake card, and whatever it wore goes back to your bag. You can't undo it. Release extras on a coat clears out spare copies, but always keeps your best one, favourites, named petlings and your team.

Trading and gifting

• Both open at level 10.
• A traded or gifted petling keeps everything about it: coat, looks, personality, Bond, name and training. Its clothes and favourite mark stay behind.
• Only petlings resting in the book can be gifted; a trade can include one that's out.
• Its coat joins the new owner's album (without essence).
• Petlings can't be sold.
